The EcoSail is a system that combines weather routing and voyage optimisation to provide ship operators with the best possible ship routes according to their preferences (fastest ETA, minimum fuel, lowest emissions, safest voyage, least structural stress, maximum passenger comfort). It is based on current and future meteorological and oceanic conditions. This is a unique, one-of-a-kind system that can provide a “complete” optimization solution. This means it serves for all ship types (small and large vessels), all shipping activities (short and long voyages), at all times (real-time), and for all combinations of user objectives. The system consists of an onshore repository centre (ORC), built on a secure cloud-based software infrastructure, that integrates and combines remote & in-situ EO data with numerical weather forecast models, ship parameters, ship performance and ship navigational information. This combination of data sources is analysed with machine learning algorithms to create a system that is self-upgrading, as it learns from the past and adjusts its models accordingly. A custom designed online graphical user interface (GUI) ensures that the system is easily accessible from any internet connected ship or shore-side fleet management portal. Lastly, the system is further enhanced with real-time performance monitoring. It collects, reports and verifies ship performances, as required by the EU’s maritime MRV regulation. It is also a digital training platform that enables ‘online’ training while on-board a vessel. The EcoSail system thus increases the efficiency of overall ship management operations.
